Maaya Wakasugi

Calligraphy artist. Born in 1977 in Okayama, Japan. He began calligraphy at the age of 6 and held his first exhibition at 17. In 2001, he graduated from the prestigious Daito Bunka University of Faculty of Chinese Literature. He developed his unique style by combining ancient characters with unconventional calligraphy style and his very artistic expressions are well regarded around the world. He participated in numerous international exhibitions such as Artexpo New York (New York), Biennale Next Step (Paris). He also performed at MoMA (New York). In January 2017, he calligraphed the title of “Onna Jōshu Naotora”, a historical drama series on the national television channel NHK. In 2018, he was the “Guest Artist of the Summer” for the municipality of Andernos-les-Bains. In 2019, he was chosen to calligraph the name of the new Japanese era "REIWA" for Yahoo! JAPAN, which is the biggest web site in Japan and his work was widely recognised. He is currently based in Bordeaux and has been teaching calligraphy at PHILOMATHICS of Bordeaux, as well as at the primary and secondary schools in the region. He also runs workshops at the DON BOSCO Institute in Gradignan.
